All Successful Life is Adaptable

Named after a phrase in Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower, All Successful Life is Adaptable, examines the in-between state of life and death Houston plants were left in after the Texas winter storm in February 2021. A climate phenomenon and display of inequitable state governance, the winter storm claimed over 200 lives, and Texans were left to look after themselves and one another. I went through Houston photographing the plants after the storm, battered but with a strong will to live, reflecting the spirit of the people affected. Poetically projecting the experiences we were having in the midst of a pandemic, the plants made me contemplate collective trauma, bringing to mind resilience and survival through their breathing leaves.
